Which water bottle suits you?

Short answer: choose on four things — capacity, insulation, how you drink and use. If you'd rather not overthink it: the Ultimate Bottle™ is our best-selling bottle and, with three interchangeable lids and sizes from 500 ml to 2 litres, covers almost every moment. Looking for something specific — a light sports bottle, a kids' bottle or an insulated cup — then this guide points you to the right choice in four steps.

There are hundreds of water bottles, but the choice becomes simple once you know what to look for. This guide walks through the four things that make the difference — capacity, material, how you drink and use — and turns them into concrete advice, with the right size and the accessories that go with it.

01

What to look for

Choosing a good water bottle comes down to four questions. Answer them in this order and the choice almost falls into place:

  • Capacity — how much do you want to carry without refilling on the go? This determines size and weight. More on this in chapter 02.
  • Insulation — does your drink need to stay cold or hot for hours? An insulated, double- or triple-wall stainless steel bottle holds temperature; a single-wall one does not.
  • How you drink — do you prefer a straw, a spout or a screw cap? This determines convenience on the go.
  • Use — office, sport, travel or for a child? Each use asks for something slightly different.

The rest of this guide works through each point and ends with concrete advice per situation.

02

Which size suits you

Capacity is the first and most important choice, because it determines how often you refill and how heavy the bottle is in your bag. VANN water bottles range from 500 ml to 2 litres. Here's how to choose:

  • 500 ml — compact and light. For short trips, an hour of sport, a small bag or for children.
  • 650 ml — the most-chosen size, and for good reason. Ideal for the commute and the office: big enough for a few hours, and with a diameter of 7.4 cm it fits almost any cup holder and bag.
  • 1 litre — for sport, hiking and long days without a chance to refill. Enough for half a day, and ice cubes stay intact for hours.
  • 2 litres — for at home, at your desk or on the terrace. Fill it once and keep it within reach. At 12.3 cm, too wide for most car cup holders.

Torn between two sizes? Choose the smaller one for carrying comfort and the larger one if you're rarely near a tap. Not sure how much you should drink? Work it out with our water calculator.

Example

Commute by train and drink mostly at the office? Then 650 ml is just right — you top up along the way anyway, and it fits your cup holder. Out all day or training hard? Then 1 litre saves you the hunt for a tap.

03

Which material suits you

Material determines taste, safety, weight and lifespan. The four common options:

  • Stainless steel — taste-neutral, doesn't absorb odours, BPA-free and lasts for years. With double- or triple-wall insulation, a stainless steel bottle keeps your drink cold or hot for a long time. For most people the most versatile choice.
  • Glass — the most neutral taste, but heavier and more fragile. Fine for at home, less so on the go.
  • Plastic — light and cheap, but can impart taste and lasts less long. If you go for it, at least choose BPA-free.
  • Titanium — extremely light and strong, but pricier and rarely insulated. Mainly of interest to hikers watching every gram.

04

Straw, spout or screw cap

How you drink seems like a detail, but in practice it determines how often you reach for the bottle. The three main types:

  • Straw — drink without tilting the bottle, one-handed. Handy on the bike, at your desk or while exercising. Then look for a bottle with a straw like the Activate Bottle™.
  • Spout or nozzle — quick sips on the go, usually with a leak-proof click closure.
  • Screw cap — the most leak-proof and easiest to clean, ideal for hot drinks and in your bag.

The big advantage of a system with interchangeable lids is that one bottle handles several forms. The Ultimate Bottle™, for example, comes with three lids — a standard drinking lid, a travel lid and a straw lid — so the same bottle goes from desk to gym to coffee on the go. That way you don't have to buy a separate bottle for every moment.

05

Which VANN for which moment

The choice translated into concrete bottles, from versatile to specialist. Start with the Ultimate Bottle™ if you're in doubt — it's our best-selling bottle for a reason.

Example

Work hybrid and drink both water and coffee? Then one Ultimate Bottle™ with the straw and screw lid covers almost all your moments — at home, at the office and on the go. Unsure about the size? Start with 650 ml.

06

Complete your bottle

A stainless steel bottle lasts for years, and with the right accessories even longer. What's often chosen alongside a bottle:

  • Extra and replacement lids — a separate straw, travel or screw lid turns one bottle into several. Handy when you want to drink differently at home than on the go.
  • Straw sets — spare straws with a brush for your bottle with a straw, so you keep drinking the way you're used to.
  • Cleaning brush and cleaning tabs — for the body, the lid and the straw, so your bottle stays fresh and odour-free. Also read how to clean a water bottle.
  • Protective sleeve or silicone boot — protects the base against dents and scratches and adds grip, just like a case around your phone.

Frequently asked questions

Which VANN water bottle is the bestseller?

The Ultimate Bottle™ is by far our best-selling water bottle. It's available from 500 ml to 2 litres, comes with three interchangeable lids and Triple Wall insulation, and therefore covers most uses — from the office to sport. For anyone in doubt, this is the safest first choice.

Which size water bottle should I choose?

500 ml for short trips and children, 650 ml as the most-chosen daily size that fits most cup holders, 1 litre for sport and long days, and 2 litres for at home or at your desk. In doubt? Choose 650 ml.

Which water bottle is best for the office?

For the office, a slim bottle of 500 to 650 ml works best: big enough for a few hours, small enough for your bag and most cup holders. Stainless steel keeps your water taste-neutral and cool. Also drink coffee or tea? Then choose an insulated model or a tumbler.

Is a stainless steel bottle better than glass or plastic?

For daily use on the go, usually yes. Stainless steel is taste-neutral, BPA-free, doesn't break easily and lasts for years. Glass gives the most neutral taste but is heavier and breakable; plastic is light but can impart taste. You can read more about the safety of stainless steel on our dedicated page.

Which water bottle keeps drinks cold the longest?

Bottles with double- or triple-wall vacuum insulation keep drinks at temperature the longest. With VANN Triple Wall models, drinks stay cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12 hours; the exact time varies per model and is stated on the product page. A single-wall bottle doesn't insulate and is meant for short-term use.

Which water bottle is suitable for children?

For children, choose a more compact size (around 350–500 ml), a leak-proof closure and preferably a straw that's easy to drink from without tilting, like the Kids Bottle™. Stainless steel is great here too because it doesn't impart taste and can take a knock.

Can an insulated bottle be used for carbonated drinks?

With VANN, yes — using the 100% leak-proof screw cap, so not the lid with a straw. With other brands, note that not every insulated bottle is made for the pressure of carbonation; check this on the product page.

Which accessories do I need for my water bottle?

For daily use, the bottle itself is enough. To make it last longer, choose a cleaning brush and cleaning tabs for maintenance, and perhaps a protective sleeve against dents. For a bottle with a straw, a spare straw set is handy.

Can a stainless steel bottle go in the dishwasher?

The body of many stainless steel bottles can go in the dishwasher, but lids, straws and seals are often better washed by hand to make them last longer. To be sure, check the product page of your bottle.

Insulation times, capacity, colours and dishwasher suitability vary per model. Always check the exact specifications on the relevant product page.
